I did not come into medicine through what one might consider the traditional route. My first job out of college was in media. While working in radio and television, I volunteered at a local hospital and became interested in medicine. That was around the same time that medical reality shows were gaining popularity, and those gave me insight into how surgery could change people's lives. Quickly, I was hooked. I left media and began working full time as a nurse's aide while attending night classes to get the needed science credits before applying to medical school.
After medical school, during my general surgery residency, I experienced the field of pediatric surgery for the first time and fell in love with it. The surgeries were wide-ranging, covering all areas of the body, while also requiring a high degree of precision and technical skill. As an added bonus, I learned how much I enjoy taking care of kids. Their joy brightens the entire room.
Communication between members of the healthcare team, my patients, and their families is of utmost importance. Whether it's a quick office visit or a major surgery, I always want those I serve to know I am someone who they can trust, and I want to help alleviate their concerns.
My husband, Matt, and I have been married for more than 20 years. We are both only children of incredible parents, and have a loving, supportive extended family. Outside of work, we enjoy outdoor activities like hiking and running, especially when we can include our Australian shepherd dog, Riley. I also love to bake, especially during the holidays.
