About Dr. Shadmani

Growing up surrounded by medical stories from his father and other relatives, Choudhury Shadmani, MD, was naturally drawn to a career in medicine. “I grew up watching my father care for his patients,” he said. In addition, he became the president of the Medical Science Club in high school, which made his future career clear. “That made me realize just how deeply I enjoyed learning about advances in medicine.”

Dr. Shadmani earned his MBBS degree at Sylhet Osmani Medical College (Sylhet, Bangladesh), which is ranked among the top medical colleges in that country. His clinical experiences and training in Bangladesh included being a Junior Doctor in critical care and cardiology; and a house physician at a hospital. In the United States, he completed externships in acute care, rheumatology, nephrology, primary care, electrophysiology, hospital medicine, hematology/oncology, and internal medicine.

He chose internal medicine as his specialty because he can care for adults with a huge range of conditions and solve complex cases. “Within internal medicine, I found my calling in hospital medicine because of its faster pace and collaborative nature,” Dr. Shadmani says.

Through his experience, patients have taught him that, even with the same diagnosis, no two people are ever the same. “Textbooks can’t capture the nuances of real people,” he says. “Some patients just want peace, while others want every test and treatment possible. I’ve learned to adapt my approach accordingly and always remain open-minded.”

In his own words…

Who is or was the most influential people/role models in your life? My father: a doctor who’s always gone above and beyond for his patients and set the standard for the kind of physician I want to be.

What was your first job growing up? What do you remember about it? My first job was at Dunkin’ Donuts, where I learned that even something as simple as making coffee can be personal, and that making people happy through small gestures and an excellent cup of coffee is deeply satisfying.

What is your favorite food? Movie? Best/worst subjects in school? Favorite food: smoothies, especially banana-blueberry. Favorite movie: Fist of Fury with Bruce Lee. Best subject: chemistry. Worst subject: English, though I think I’ve gotten better since then!

If you could sit down to dinner with anyone (alive or deceased) who would it be and why? Michael Jackson, because I’d love to understand the mindset it takes to become the best at something.

Outside of medicine, what are you passionate about? Being healthy, taking long drives with my wife while listening to audiobooks, basketball, martial arts and big cats.

What is something most people don’t know about you? I have loved visiting zoos for as long as I can remember.
