I had the chance to be exposed to the nonexistent health care in Nigeria and spent time working with diverse groups. The quality of care and life for those living with medical illness in Nigeria is negligible. Growing up in a family that embraced traditional and Western medicine revealed that in addition to the physiology of patients, the cultural and social factors that influence the way individuals seek and accept medical treatment are crucial. As a family medicine physician, I hope to play a role in highlighting the importance of a patient?s physiological and social background to fully address wellbeing.
