He completed his internal medicine residency and cardiology fellowship at the San Antonio Uniform Services Health Education Consortium in San Antonio, Texas. After his medical training, he served as the Chief of Cardiology at Eglin Air Force Base. During his active duty time, he served two combat deployments in support of Operations Iraqi and Enduring Freedom (Afghanistan) as a critical care air transport physician flying critically wounded patients out of the combat theater to a higher echelon of care.
