About
Nils Johnson
Nils P. Johnson, MD, is a board-certified and fellowship-trained interventional cardiologist with a special focus on using pressure and flow measurements to clarify the diagnosis and select optimal treatment. He seeks to improve patient care by applying clinical physiology, both noninvasive perfusion imaging and invasive pressure measurements. In addition to seeing patients a UT Physicians, he cares for patients in the cardiac care unit and hospital wards, practices interventional cardiology in the catheterization laboratory, and interprets SPECT and PET perfusion images.
He’s also a professor of cardiology and the Weatherhead Distinguished Chair of Heart Disease at McGovern Medical School at UTHealth Houston.
Johnson grew up in Houston, Texas, Tulsa, Oklahoma, and Edmonton in Alberta, Canada (his father was in the oil industry). During high school, he became an Eagle Scout, played violin in the All-State Orchestra, and then spent an exchange year in Witzenhausen, Germany. He completed his undergraduate degree in physics and computing at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver and medical school at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons in Manhattan in 2004. He completed his internal medicine residency in 2006, his cardiology fellowship in 2010, and his interventional cardiology fellowship in 2010, all of which were at Northwestern McGaw Medical Center. In 2016, he completed a one-year academic sabbatical with Nico Pijls, MD, at the Catharina Hospital in Eindhoven, Netherlands, emphasizing invasive coronary physiology.
His research with his McGovern Medical School mentor, K. Lance Gould, MD, started in 1999. This research focuses on clinical coronary physiology, from noninvasive perfusion imaging to intracoronary hemodynamics. He served as the principal investigator for international trials in coronary physiology like CONTRAST (NCT02184117) and DEFINE-FLOW (NCT02328820). His current projects include quantitative FFR pullbacks (PPG registry, NCT04789317) and novel aortic valve physiology (SAVI-AoS, NCT04514250).
He has lectured in 19 countries across four continents and contributed to over 140 publications.
