He completed his undergraduate degree at Purdue University with a BS in Genetics and graduated from medical school at Indiana University. After completing a combined internal medicine - pediatrics residency at Indiana University, he was a primary care physician in Washington State.  After moving to North Carolina, he became a pediatric hospitalist on a pediatric nephrology service, and then completed an adult nephrology fellowship at the University of North Carolina.
