While working in a Neurosciences Critical Care Unit (NCCU), I realized just how gratifying helping people with neurological issues is. I want to enable them to feel better. I also want to be challenged—and neurology is challenging. Learning about my patients and finding moments of shared joy is a welcome reward.

I like to laugh with my patients. Being present and compassionate makes those moments possible. When a patient brings concerns to a visit, it’s my job to listen, validate their struggle and make safe and effective suggestions for their plan of care.
