Please, please find someone else! I took my 14-year old daughter to see NP Rose Ampadu due to ongoing anxiety and depression, which had led to loss of appetite and inability to sleep. She had started talking to voices in her head to cope with these things. Rose spoke with my daughter privately for 20 minutes. She then called me into the room. She asked me if there are any mental health issues in my family, which I replied no. She then stated that I probably wouldn’t know if we did because usually people with schizophrenia do not tell others about their diagnosis. (Yes, THIS is how she told met that she was diagnosing my child with schizophrenia.) She then proceeded to tell me that she hopes I have a good insurance because she is recommending an injectable psychotropic to manage my daughter’s illness, as this is the only way to really control her chemical imbalance. She continued talking about insurance, money, and medications as my daughter sobbed in her chair next to me. Never once did Rose look at her to give reassurance or compassion.
Luckily I am a nurse and I am familiar with the DSM manual that is used to diagnose mental disorders. My daughter does not even come close to the criteria needed for a diagnosis of schizophrenia. Rose did not complete any testing to rule out medical illnesses before jumping to this diagnosis. Rose did not even interview my daughter with any of the commonly used assessments, tests, or scales that are used to diagnose this disorder.
Rose simply read the intake forms that we had completed, spoke with my daughter for 20 short minutes, and concluded by giving her a diagnosis of schizophrenia and recommending a lifelong injectable treatment (with an array of side effects) that would forever change my daughter’s mental state. We were looking for help, but Rose made the situation so much worse.
We made an appointment with someone else the very next day and our new counselor is appalled at what we went through and agreed that this diagnosis does not fit my daughter.
If you are looking for help, please go somewhere else!
