Such a disappointing experience!
I had cataract surgery and opted for the mulitfocal lens. Dr. Schein advised that the only thing insurance would not cover is the cost of this particular lens. He advised everything else - his fees, the facility, anesthesia, etc - would be covered. The cost of this multifocal lens is $3250 per eye and I paid upfront and out of pocket. I have a document from Wilmer Billing indicating this cost as I needed something in writing for my HSA dollars. As it turns out, the cost of the lens is only $1250 per eye (I have a Wilmer billing document that shows this actual lens cost). The other $2000 per eye goes to Dr. Schein except he insists it doesn't come to him (according to the billing department it goes to Dr. Schein but he just doesn't know it - whatever that means). All of this info came to surface because my eyes have not done well with this lens (a combination of Dr. Schein inserting them slightly decentered as well as the anatomy of my eye) and unfortunately Dr. Schein performed a follow up YAG procedure which prevents me from having these lenses removed and a more suitable lens inserted. There was absolutely no reason Dr Schein and Wilmer were not forthcoming about what the $6500 I paid for out of pocket covered. Being transparent may not have changed the decision I made but certainly, it would have made this whole unfortunate experience more tolerable. Shame on these folks!
