After receiving her medical degree in Cuba, Dr Veliz completed Internal Medicine residency training and was named Chief Resident, at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. She was awarded a fellowship in Oncology/Hematology at the University of South Florida H Lee Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa.
