About

Ramavathi Nandyala

Cardiologist Ramavathi Nandyala, MD is Board Certified in Internal Medicine, Cardiology and Nuclear Cardiology. She is a member of several professional associations, including American College of Cardiology, Texas Medical Association, Bexar County Medical Society and American Heart Association.

With expertise in the full spectrum of Cardiology from prevention and lifestyle modification to acute, inpatient cardiac care, Dr. Nandyala also distinguishes herself as one of only a few women cardiologists in practice today.

“I’m seeing more women patients since I started—mostly because they specifically want to see a female cardiologist who understands how heart disease in women is unique. I’m also seeing more young women in my practice. Many face the same risk factors like type 2 diabetes, obesity and a sedentary lifestyle as men do, but they are also emotionally stressed with the demands of work and family. This stress is another important risk factor for the heart and can even cause arrhythmias we don’t often see in men,” says Dr. Nandyala.

As a strong proponent of preventive care, Dr. Nandyala devotes much of her time to counseling patients around lifestyle changes to reduce the burden of heart disease and to improve their overall health and wellbeing. “I’ll often set goals with my patients and I know they’re excited when they come back and we can celebrate their accomplishments,” she says.

Dr. Nandyala is also an expert in transradial diagnostic cardiac catheterization where blocked arteries can be visualized by inserting a catheter into the patient’s wrist (instead of the groin) and into vessels that supply blood to the heart. This wrist approach is associated with fewer bleeding and vascular complications and offers increased comfort since patients can sit up immediately following the procedure.

Dr. Nandyala graduated from Osmania Medical College in Hyderabad, India, and completed her residency at Mount Sinai School of Medicine in Englewood, New Jersey and a cardiology pacemaker fellowship at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center in Newark, New Jersey. In 2004, when she had had enough of digging her car out of the snow all winter long, Dr. Nandyala moved her family to Texas. She completed cardiology research and cardiology fellowships at University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio.
