About

Rachael Hartley, RD, LD, CDE

My goal is to help my clients reach their optimum state of wellness by coaching them towards a minimally processed, plant based diet. Of course, labs and numbers are important, but my main concern is how you feel. I am more interested in what you eat and your relationship with food than any number on the scale.

In coaching my clients, I take a holistic approach, assessing any and all issues that may impact their health and wellness. My background in psychology has given me a unique perspective to understand the many factors that influence food choices and eating behaviors. I individualize recommendations to each unique client, which ultimately leads to a plan thats easier to maintain and achieves better outcomes.

I've worked with clients from a wide range of socioeconomic groups, cultural backgrounds and ages. Working in general nutrition, I have extensive experience with general wellness, weight loss, diabetes, heart disease, food allergies/sensitivities and digestive disorders. I am also experienced working in the following specialty areas:

Depression
Most people don't realize mood can be impacted by diet, but recent science has provided a greater understanding of the mind-body connection. Specific nutrients are needed in the creation of mood-enhancing neurotransmitters. Food truly can have a powerful impact on depression and should be considered an important adjunct to therapy.

Irritable Bowel Syndrome
Irritable bowel syndrome is one of the most poorly understood medical diagnoses. It's also one of the most disabling. Did you know IBS is the second leading cause of work absenteeism, right behind the common cold? Conventional nutrition advice for IBS rarely helps, but new research as found treatments that can improve symptoms for 75% of people.

Fibromyalgia
Fibromyalgia, a chronic disease that causes severe join pain, is often difficult to manage, as doctors are still unsure of the root cause. A clean diet, rich in plants and anti-inflammatory fats helps to control symptoms, but many people with fibromyalgia also have difficult to pinpoint food sensitivities that can exacerbate pain. Determining and eliminating these foods can significantly reduce symptoms, lessening the need for medication.

Disordered Eating
With a billion dollar diet industry and the media’s unrealistic portrayal of beauty, it’s not hard to see why so many men and women have developed an unhealthy relationship with food. Normal eating isn't about dieting and restriction. It's about choosing foods you love that nourish your body and soul. It's eating enough to feel satisfied, not leaving the table hungry or uncomfortably full. It can be difficult to balance eating healthy with the pleasure of eating, but as a food lover, I can help you find that balance and nurture a healthy relationship with food.

Individual Nutrition Counseling
Eating healthy can feel overwhelming, even impossible at times, especially if your approach isn't right for you. In my practice, I take a holistic approach to nutrition, viewing each client as a unique individual rather than prescribing a "one size fits all" diet. Although I focus on moving clients towards a minimally processed, plant-based diet, in the end, I want to find what works best for you. During our appointment, I will assess not only your medical history, but current diet patten, lifestyle, emotional needs and possible barriers to change. I look outside the box to find the root cause of your weight and/or health problems. Together, we will create a set of personalized goals that focus on nourishing your body rather than deprivation. It is my goal to make it simple, fun and delicious to reach your personal health goals!

Individual nutrition coaching is available in person at my office in Columbia, SC. I am also available for appointments nationwide via telephone or Skype. The following options are available:

60 Minute Initial Consultation
During our initial appointment, I will conduct a thorough evaluation, examining what, when, where, why and how you eat. From there, we will work together to create a realistic plan to reach your health goals. After the appointment, I will send you a personalized packet of handouts, a list of goals, and an individualized list of meal and snack ideas, taking into account your food preferences, cooking skills and time you are able to devote to cooking. You also have access to unlimited support over email.

30 Minute Follow Up Session
I recommend scheduling one or more follow up appointments, especially if you have more complex health or nutrition issues, are looking to make major lifestyle changes, or if you have an unhealthy relationship with food. During the follow up session, we will check-in on previously set goals and add on new goals as you feel ready. We'll also troubleshoot in any areas where you may be struggling. You may order follow-up sessions a la carte, or in discounted packages of 2 or 5.

60 Minute Single Session
Looking for a quick diet tune-up or personalized nutrition counseling on a budget? Then a single session is right for you. You will also receive an individualized packet of handouts, list of personal goals, and personalized list of meal ideas. In a single session appointment, I spend less time evaluating and more time educating. You will also have access to unlimited email support.

Group Classes

Single Class
Think about planning a nutrition class as a fun and unique get together with friends or coworkers. My classes are discussion oriented, with plenty of props, visuals, humor and a few tasty bites to eat - no boring lectures here! Tell me the subject you are interested in, and I will develop a class just for you. Examples of topics include:
Lose weight without counting a single calorie
Spring cleaning for your diet
Super foods that will supercharge your health
Top nutrition tips for athletes

Class Series
If you have a group of friends or coworkers looking to change their lifestyle, schedule a class series. This will allow you to learn about healthy eating while building a support system and accountability. A class series is a budget friendly option, especially with a larger group, as I charge per class, rather than per person. Let me know what topics you are interested in, and I will develop a class series that's right for your group. Examples include weight loss, chronic disease management, or healthy cooking. Along with the class series, each member will receive a review of their diet based off a review of a 7-day food journal at no added charge.

Custom Meal Plan
Do you want to eat healthy, but don't know where to start? Let me take the worry out of what to eat by developing a personalized 5-day meal plan suited to your needs. I will send you an in depth questionnaire to better understand your health goals, lifestyle, food likes and dislikes and cooking skills. Using this information, I will create a menu filled with delicious and nourishing foods!

For Health Care Providers

I am also available to work with health care providers and medical clinics, educating staff and/or clients. Good nutrition is a critical aspect of health care, yet many clinics do not have access to a registered dietitian. Hire me to educate staff so they are able to educate clients with accurate and understandable nutrition information. Or, hire me to educate your clients directly, with a class series geared towards managing chronic disease.
