About

Shelley Morin, LMFTA

I believe that spending time with a present, empathetic and compassionate other is a basic human need. As a therapist, I know both how important this need is and how underfed it can become. Naturally we attempt to meet this need with friends and family, however even when surrounded by loved ones we may find ourselves desiring of something more. This is where finding a counselor suited to you and your personal style can be a good investment of time and energy.

Practically, I avoid the rigidity of diagnosis. My job is to see my clients through their masks and create an experience of authentic connection to cultivate healing and change. I also often use humor in my counseling, but have discovered this is difficult to communicate on a website without sounding disingenuous. (Trust me though, I'm funny!)

Educationally, my background balances research-driven and scientifically minded psychology with a holistic, systemic, and presence-based approach to counseling. As I weave this history together, a session may include both a mindfulness-based meditation and a brief educational offering about the brain.

Anxiety wears many faces. Sometimes it appears with paralyzing candor; the racing thoughts or nagging worry which steals the joy from quiet moments and robs our nights of sleep. It might creep in, slowly, and build until we one day notice that it takes up more space in our bodies than we do. It can push its way into a family, nestle in to the day’s routine and become part of the household with its incessant whisperings of ‘what if.’ Sometimes it is more subtle, and can even wear a mask of accomplishment. In this form, it is usually hidden from view until its host notices the tension in their muscles or the stiffness in their jaw. In the young it can be especially well camouflaged. Maybe a headache or a stomachache is the sign, or loved ones might notice a change in behavior or mood. However anxiety makes itself known, once it has arrived it is a stubborn guest and trying to banish it alone can prove overwhelming. Together we can disarm anxiety. Let me help you evict it from your life, or the life of someone you love.

Individuals

Individuals who struggle against anxiety may do so for many reasons. If you are one such individual, you may have a long term relationship with anxiety, which began in childhood or adolescence and has followed you into adulthood. You may be travelling through a particularly challenging time in your career or personal life, and this may have invited anxiety into your world. However it has entered, let me help you change your relationship with anxiety.

Families

Parenting is arguably the most difficult and most important job humans can undertake. It is also one of the most isolating and anxiety-producing. Even preparation for creating a family can produce significant emotional distress, such as problems during pregnancy, or the excruciating loss of a child. Once children are present in the family the stress and strain can continue, with behavioral and developmental struggles putting pressure on parents and children alike. I can work with your family to help create change that will make space for new experiences where the worry once lived.

Adolescents

It doesn't take a professional to tell you adolescence is an incredibly challenging time. This is true for both the teen and their family members, as everyone struggles to adjust to the rapid pace of transition. Externally, behaviors change, interests change; appearances, friend groups, and romantic interests all change. Internally a massive neurological growth spurt is taking place, underpinning these behavioral changes. Added to this is the increasing stress of being successful academically and preparing for the next phase of life. If you are a teen with anxiety, or a family member who suspects your teen may need additional support, contact me for support.
