About

Geena Thomas, LISW

Hello and welcome! My name is Geena Thomas, LISW, and I am an integrative and holistic psychotherapist who works with adult women individually and in workshops in Santa Fe, NM. I graduated from the Columbia University School of Social Work in 1987 and have rich practice experience in New York City, Brooklyn (NY), and Rhode Island. My approach is an active collaboration between myself and my client, is based on what a client wants as her goals, is non-judgmental, relaxed, responsive, empowered, kind, and strengths-based (focused on growing what is positive and strong about the client and her life, not on what is "wrong" or needs to be "fixed"). The work is always enriched by my belief both western and eastern therapeutic techniques.

With many years as a clinician at mental health agencies, I have had the honor of working with many people facing extensive challenges. I have solid experience counseling clients struggling with depression, anxiety, codependence, low self-esteem, painful relationships, a cancer diagnosis or living life after cancer, histories of abuse (emotional/physical/sexual), body image issues, alcohol abuse, and behavioral addictions (such as sex addiction and compulsive overeating/binge eating).

Further, I welcome work with clients who want to explore issues related to personal identity and growth such as creativity (can include creativity coaching), identify a sense of purpose or passion in life, spirituality, sexuality, career, and living "true to yourself" (despite social, cultural, family and gender roles).

I have created and guided multiple psychoeducational groups on issues such as Wellness and Self-Care, Female Empowerment and Identity, Life Goals Identification, Substance Abuse and Relapse Prevention, Trauma, and Expressive Journaling.

My aim is to create a safe, nonjudgmental space for clients where they can talk about their experiences, whatever they are, be deeply heard, and actively responded to. Clients find me to be compassionate, warm, informed, and as one said, "easygoing but with a strong backbone". My wish is to assist clients in their search for more positive ways to either be in their lives, or perceive their lives, so that they can experience peace and contentment in a more consistent way. As a holistic practitioner, I draw from a combination of therapeutic principles and techniques and that can help the client cope with difficult emotions, gain insights, and meet their goals. These may include mind-body psychotherapies, teaching and encouraging mindfulness practices, cognitive behavioral therapy, briefly exploring psychodynamic connections, feminist therapy principles, existential principles, coaching techniques, narrative therapy, creativity/making/expressive arts techniques (visual, written and/or performance), guided imagery, somatic experiencing, and investigation into the "meaning, purpose, and passion" in life.

I use a variety of recovery modalities, depending on what works for the client, including 12 Step, 16 Step, and harm reduction models.

Also, I am keenly aware of how our inner selves are impacted not only by what we've come into this world with and what has happened to us, but also by our relationships, and our financial, social, cultural, and political realities. I work to help clients gain compassion for themselves in light of these sometimes oppressive influences.

Geena was the BEST therapist I've ever had, and I've had many over the years. Her genuine care and concern sets her apart from other therapists. I felt like she liked seeing me and working with me, which made the experience so much more powerful. I did some fantastic work with Geena and will never forget all that I learned with her.
