About

Sunflower Health Care of Stilwell

Sunflower Health Care of Stilwell came into existence on January 1, 2008. From our strategic location in southern Johnson County, we have been providing superior hospice care to patients and families in all of the counties we serve. We have been successful in doing so by keeping our focus simple:

The Care You Need. The Comfort You Deserve.

We believe that the hospice benefit is the most misunderstood and underutilized benefit in health care today. The hospice umbrella has expanded a great deal since its inception and now encompasses a plethora of services, covering many more diagnoses than it once did. Sadly, the number of patients who actually benefit is much lower than those who qualify for it.

Our patients' families commonly tell us: "I only wish we had known about your sooner.

Furthermore, many hospice beneficiaries start the service much later then they should or could have. On a daily basis, we combat the stigma of what hospice used to be and try educate toward eliminating the notion to only "call in hospice" just a day or two before death. Remember, the focus of hospice care is not the death of the patient, but the life of the patient, ensuring comfort, quality of life, and fullness of life.

Hospice patients benefit by receiving proactive care and expert pain management in their home by a specially trained team of professionals, working together to ensure the best quality of life possible.

Hospice patients families benefit by receiving assistance with the care of their loved one. This assistance can come in the form of training, direct care, access to medical professionals, help with homemaker chores and transportation or even just relief for personal time to spend as they see fit. They are an integral part of the patient's plan of care and we value and respect their wishes for their loved one.

Hospice physicians benefit by ensuring their patients follow a plan of care specifically designed to optimize life for their patients and by having a team to serve as an extension of their care that acts as a liaison between doctor and patient.

Medicare benefits by delivering positive outcomes for their patients at the lowest possible expense.

Prior to the early 2000's, the hospice benefit was used almost exclusively for cancer patients in their last days. Today, the hospice benefit is extended to patients with many varied diagnoses, including Heart Failure, Pulmonary Disease, Cancer, Stroke, ALS, Alzheimer's/Dementia, HIV, Liver Disease, Renal Failure and even General Debility/Failure to Thrive. Hospice guidelines state that the patients physician and the hospice medical director must certify that the patient is may live for 6 months or less, should the illness run a natural course.
