Services Santa Monica Gestalt Therapy

You are probably familiar with the Gestalt Principle, which is often summarized as the whole is greater than the sum of the parts. Gestalt Therapy is a powerful method that focuses on the here and now of your experience and concerns. It focuses on being present and on the therapist-client relationship, and looks at your past as it affects you now. This method is holistic and considers every part of your life experience, both internally and externally, including your history, relationships, spiritual beliefs, work, family, culture, and environment. Its focus on your experiences allows for great clarity about not only the why of your concerns but also the what, when, and how. This style has trained me to be sharply present with you so that we can understand what your concerns are, who you truly are as a complete person, and what you want in your life. Through this style of therapy we can create a new freedom from anxiety, depression, fear, and low self-esteem by confronting all of the obstacles that are currently preventing you from moving toward your goals for your life.

Differentiation-Based Approach to Marital and Sexual Therapy in Santa Monica

Differentiation-Based Therapy is the only therapy that integrates the two fields of marital therapy and sex therapy. My training in this style allows me to help you learn to tolerate anxiety, as well as create intimacy and passion in your relationships. Its based on differentiation the ability to soothe your own anxiety while maintaining close relationships with others, even when they do not soothe themselves. This theory views the individual as resilient and teaches you to stand on your own two feet with others. You will learn to tolerate emotional challenges in order to achieve personal growth.

Psychodynamic Therapy in Santa Monica

Much of my initial education and training has been in insight-oriented therapy, also known as Psychodynamic Therapy. This theory focuses on the unconscious processes that affect you in the present. The goals are for you to have self-awareness and to understand the way the past influences you, so that you can understand the present and effect change where you feel it's needed most. Using this theory, we may explore your childhood and early relationships, as well as other significant life experiences.

Because Psychodynamic Therapy is about knowing yourself with great depth, it is often long-term. It includes a constant focus on how you relate both to yourself and to me, allowing us to examine the past in the therapy sessions, as well as in between our sessions.

Family Systems Therapy in Santa Monica

Family Systems Theory is another method in my psychological repertoire. My formal education in this theory has trained me to understand the functioning of families and to better analyze individuals by assessing the entire family. I view symptoms in individuals as an expression of difficulties and possible dysfunctions of their families. The family is a whole and complex unit, and with skillful change in one member, all family members can benefit. Further, making changes in the family system can also change the individual. I have used this training in my work with families and children, and in leading parenting classes.

Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy in Santa Monica

Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) is a mind-body approach to working with depression and anxiety. It blends the mindfulness techniques of Buddhism with cognitive therapy. In my meditation training in places like India, Nepal, Australia, and the U.S., I have learned to use mindfulness to accept thoughts and feelings without judgment. A common part of my therapeutic style is to help my clients learn to be fully present to their experiences, moment by moment, without judgment. The goal is to know yourself deeply and to understand your thoughts and feelings intimately, and further, to know the difference between you and your thoughts and feelings. I train you to not be afraid of your difficult thoughts, emotions, and life circumstances, but instead to grow beyond them. By becoming increasingly more powerful than the challenges inside and outside your body, you can use new challenges as a way to grow even further.

I'm mystified by the comments about the staff. I've never interacted with anyone other than Dr. Ortiz, who has always been very responsive. Like the other reviewer, I have found Dr. Ortiz to be an effective and caring therapist. He's given me and my family insight into destructive behavior patterns we'd developed, and he's given us constructive suggestions for doing things differently. Our family dynamics are unquestionably healthier.

Dr. Ortiz is one great therapist. We brought our son to him because he was depressed and became suicidal after his friend died in a car accident. Our son began to feel better after the first meeting with Dr. Ortiz, and each week he learned more and made more meanings from his loss. He is happy about that relationship and everything else, thanks to Dr. Ortiz.

Oh, he was always on time for appointments and his office is very nice and professional, with some lovely plants around. It was one of the best looking offices I've ever seen.
