Before couple’s counseling, my husband and I were having huge fights on a weekly basis, at least. We knew that our marriage was in trouble but didn’t know how to fix it. Helen’s couples counseling program helped us develop the skills we needed to build a stronger, more open relationship. The program is structured like a workshop, so it will require real effort on your part, but the results are worth it. Every week we were given exercises to better understand ourselves, each other, and develop critical interpersonal and communication skills. Personally, the most helpful parts were learning conflict resolution skills, how to identify harmful patterns, and how to put up healthy boundaries. Within weeks, our fighting decreased dramatically in intensity and frequency. We were also having more open discussions, actually solving our problems together, and enjoying our free time and each other’s company more. I even found the skills she taught to be just as effective with coworkers and family members, leading to healthier relationships overall. Helen was always flexible in scheduling appointments and how she counseled us. We were actually located far away from her practice, but she was accommodating when it came to the distance and our work schedules, conducting evening sessions via Skype when it was most convenient for us. I also felt that she was flexible in how she dealt with patients and her level of firmness always seemed appropriate and was exactly what I needed at the time. Helen always says that she doesn’t want you to rehash the argument in a session, so don’t expect someone who will listen to you regurgitate old fights. Instead she’ll help you to get to the root of the arguments, by giving you and your partner the tools to solve your own problems through better communication and understanding. We now have a better understanding of ourselves, each other, and how to communicate, and continue to use the techniques long after the workshop has ended. Sometimes I think this was as much “Being a Healthy Person” counseling as marital counseling.
