they are the worse place ever, what kind of animal hospital is only open on the weekdays at night, what your dog only get sick at night?

My experience with GVVC was adequate yet slightly awkward and, of course, expensive. Our dog (female heeler/collie mix, 12 yo) decided on a Sunday morning to slit her forearm down to the bone/tendon trying to clear a barbed wire fence. After trying, unsuccessfully, to find ANY regular vet open and available on a weekend (knowing Emergency Vet was going to be a rip off) we had no choice but to take her there.
Upon arrival we were greeted (if you can call it that) by a timid young lady who looked to be late teens early 20 s. She seems scared of her own shadow and uncomfortable talking to the general public. She was never sure of anything she was saying (time frame of procedure, cost, wait before seeing doctor) and apologized often using more umm s and awkward giggles than professionally necessary.
After the hour-ish wait (we left the dog in the truck to save her from the stress of the other animals in the waiting area) during which time there were no less than 4 separate instances of people walking out crying because their animals were put down (I don t know the circumstances but made me wonder if that was their main goal) we were taken to a room by the same young lady that greeted us who, again awkwardly, took our dogs vitals.
The saving grace of all this review was the doctor... Ann... Sch... don t remember the rest. She was good. Kind, down to earth and upfront about what was going on during her routine check and what needed to be done regarding the injury. She put me at ease that at least someone in the building could communicate and would be responsible for our animal.
That s kinda where the good ends again. The cost... $600 (included surgery - 7 stitches, anesthetizing, temp boarding, i.v. fluids, antibiotics and take home meds) I don t consider it a complete rip-off, but knowing if a regular vet had been open, it would have been about half that is disheartening. Then the other issue was the wait time. We left there at 12:30 and was told she would be in surgery by 2:30 (because of other patients) and should be able to go home no later than 7PM. I had to call THEM at 5:15PM because I had heard no update, to be told that she still hadn t even gone into surgery yet. They assured me she was being prepped and would be in soon and that someone would call with an update in about an hour once it was done. 7:00 we finally left home (Loma) and drove into town to find out in person what was going on. When we arrived at 7:30 we were told they had just finished with her,, surgery went well, but we needed to wait about 45 mins or more before we could take her home so that the anesthesia could wear off a bit. 8:30 PM we were finally walk out the door with our girl.
Again, honestly speaking the overall experience wasn t horrible, and the one person you want to be professional (the doctor) was. The night shift people who were there when we arrived were more professional and courteous, but the cost, time and lack of communication is what brought me to the 3-Star rating.
Should an emergency arise, I would use them again, but I can only pray that in the future my animals schedule their injuries during normal business hours.
