I have a friend, a 69 year old widow, whose twenty year old cat, Mama Cat, had cancer. It was time to have Mama Cat euthanized. Although bleeding from a tumor on her stomach and incontinent, she had a good appetite and showed no signs of pain.

I have witnessed this before when I took a beloved old cat to be euthanized (not by this vet), tearfully watching her as the life left her eyes. She died mercifully and peacefully.

Our friend wanted to be with Mama Cat in her last moments. My Wife and I went along for emotional support. Our pets are family members after all, and losing one is traumatic. We took Mama Cat to Dr. Van Deusen whose services our friend had been using. We all went into the examination room. Both doors were left open.

Any cat person knows you restrain a cat by grabbing the loose skin on the back of their neck and it induces a sort of paralysis. The young woman assisting did not do this, nor did she wear protective gloves. Dr. Van Deusen turned on the clippers to shave for the injection which startled mama Cat who was still VERY strong and struggled mightily against the young woman's attempts to restrain her. The secretary, who was also in the room, got excited and repeatedly shrieked "Don't let her bite you! Don't let her bite you!” Terrified, Mama Cat uttered a heart-wrenching wail and broke free, bolting toward an open door. I blocked her from escaping to the waiting room full of people and pets. Mama Cat ran into another examination room and hid behind the door. The young woman, now wearing leather protective gloves, retrieved poor old Mama Cat, still wailing, holding her down while Dr. Van Deusen injected her. It was over. We were shocked and horrified that our friend’s loving companion of twenty years had to spend the last moments of her life in abject terror.

This was not euthanasia of a beloved pet, it was a cold-blooded execution at the hands of strangers.

Our friend was inconsolable on the way home, sobbing "you take them to the vet because it's supposed to be the humane thing to do…and look what happens...my poor old Mama Cat...she loved me…she trusted me...and look what I did to her…"

Incompetence made this situation, emotionally wrenching under the best of circumstances, needlessly traumatic. There was absolutely no mercy or peace for poor old Mama Cat and certainly no peace for poor those of us who witnessed this travesty.

Additionally, Dr. Van Deusen seemed to be somewhat overmedicated and not really with it. he had us confused with being associated with another poor sick cat in one of his cages. He had heart issues and is tethered to an oxygen tank. Had he been able to pay proper attention he would have noticed that the young women did not have Mama Cat properly restrained.
