My son had an appointment with his counselor today. I was seated in the waiting area. His counselor, upon seeing me, ask him if he would mind if I also attended the meeting. He agreed.

The counselor from the first moment of contact acted in a hostile manner towards me - refusing to make eye contact, didn't smile, or act friendly. I entered the meeting in good spirits and was very pleased with the progress my son has made. He has just recently successfully completed an inpatient drug treatment program. Both he and I were positive and upbeat.

By the end the of the meeting, I had been insulted and humiliated several times on many different levels. She had formed an opinion before gathering the pertinent information to make an informed decision. Some of her allegations were outrageous.

Our property is subdivided and my son lives in a house we own on that property. She stated that because we own the property that we KNOW what is going on over there at all times. She knows this "because I have been in family counseling a very long time." Unless I go outside I can't even see the entrance to his house. I do not know when people come or when they leave. I guess if I stood at the window in the downstairs guest bedroom, I would be able to see. However, I don't make a habit of doing that. He's 44 years old, not a child.

She is one of those people that insults and accuses but offers no suggestion for how to improve the situation. I hated her approach. She asks a question and then I'm suppose to not answer truthfully but try to guess at what she "thinks" is the truth. She is of the opinion that I do not care if my son succeeds. I have spoken to her twice. How could she possibly know that? Which, by the way, is absolutely not true.

She said it was important that I be a part of my son's counseling. Why would I go there again and be abused? I thought counselors were support to help not anger and alienate the people they meet with. I'm glad my son likes her because I most definitely do not. I personally would give her no stars. In fact I don't think she's qualified to be called "a counselor". She may have a certification hanging on her wall but that doesn't make her a decent human being - in my opinion.
