Dr. Allison was consistently detached and distant. He has no staff, which is not a problem, except that his detachment made me feel that I was almost intruding and asking a favor by calling for an appointment. In our sessions, it was rare that he made an observation or asked a question. It happened less than once per meeting. When he did, the question tended to be challenging, and I appreciated his insight, but as stated, this came very rarely. There was no structure to our sessions. A few times he reminded me that I had not completed the description of something, such as my family members. I never felt that he had even a slight interest in my situation, nor any intention of helping me to define it or improve it.
At last, it was necessary for me to go out of town for several months, to see family members. Pressure built, and I phoned Dr. Allison to ask if I could have a session or even speak to him for a few minutes by phone. I made it clear that I would pay his usual fee, and that I strongly needed to talk to someone. He said no, he couldn't do that. His hello, after several months of absence, was as cool and distant as ever. He did not say anything that a normal acquaintance would have said: i.e. I hope your visit is going well, when are you coming back, it's good to hear from you, why are you calling, etc. I might as well have been talking to a machine. After his curt refusal to speak with me, he added, "You are welcome to schedule an appointment when you return if you wish." My return was still several months in the future, and I thought, if I had one wish, I'd rather waste it on a duck.

I left Dr. Allison's service feeling that I had wasted time that I might have spent working with someone who was invested in working with me, more upset than I had started, with decidedly lower self-esteem than I had come in with. Dr. Allison made no effort to increase my insight or to make me feel that it was worth increasing. I felt boring and dumb. While never overtly rude, he gave the impression that he was contemplating his wallpaper and finding it displeasing, but not worth the effort of changing. That is the feeling he has left me with, so I believe he could have made some difference in some more positive way, if he had only wanted to.
