Dr. Kieval was born in the Boston area. After obtaining his undergraduate degree from Emory University, he spent several years performing medical research with the Emory University School of Medicine. Dr. Kieval received his medical degree and graduated cum laude from Boston University School of Medicine where he was the recipient of the Boston University Award for Outstanding Contributions. He then went on to complete his residency in Ophthalmology at the Boston University Medical Center, and was selected to serve as the Chief Resident in Ophthalmology. Dr. Kieval was selected among the best residents in the country to complete his subspecialty training with a fellowship in Cornea, Refractive Surgery, and External Disease at the world renowned Bascom Palmer Eye Institute. Bascom Palmer Eye Institute has been ranked as the #1 eye hospital in the country for the last 7 consecutive years by the US News and World Report Magazine. In 2008, the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute was also named the #1 eye hospital in the country by AARP The Magazine.
Dr. Kieval has lectured and presented his research extensively at national and international meetings. He has authored numerous publications and contributed to text books in the field of ophthalmology, as well as the field of neuroscience. He has been invited to speak at several academic institutions as well as the New England Ophthalmological Society. He is dedicated to using cutting edge technology and advanced surgical techniques to provide exceptional care for his patients. Dr. Kievals personal interests include corneal transplants and DSAEK surgery, laser vision correction, and complex intraocular lens surgery. Dr. Kieval was elected by his peers to be a member of the Vanguard Ophthalmology Society, an organization established to recognize and unite future leaders in the field of Cornea, Cataract, and Refractive surgery. He is also an active member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons, and the International Society of Refractive Surgeons. He is also on staff at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary at Harvard University.
Dr. Kieval lives in the Lexington area with his wife and three children. He is an avid tennis player, and enjoys scuba diving and cooking.
