Education Dr. Montgomery completed four years of dental school at the University of Mississippi Medical Center. She graduated magna cum laude with a Doctor of Dental Medicine degree and was selected as a member of the National Dental Honor Society, Omicron Kappa Upsilon. Following dental school, Dr. Montgomery received her certificate in advanced general dentistry at the University of Mississippi Medical Center. Dr. Montgomery then completed a residency in orthodontics and dentofacial orthopedics and obtained a master's of science degree in dentistry at the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond, Virginia.

My family made the mistake of using Dr. Britton Montgomery and SmartSmile for my child’s braces. Initially we had no complaints and were pleased with her services. All that changed when we moved from Jackson, MS, to Springfield, MO.

We informed Dr. Montgomery several months in advance of our move and had about 12 months left of treatment. Because we had no insurance and had paid our balance in full, she strongly encouraged us to continue treatment at Smartsmile even though this meant a 16 hour round trip in the car as well as requiring a weekend stay in Jackson. Dr. Montgomery did not work on Fridays, so we were forced to take our appointments on Monday mornings. We were often scheduled at the Richland clinic,30 minutes out of the way, and were given no priority and were often forced to wait for 30 minutes or more. No one seemed to care that we had driven through 4 states to get there or that we still had an 8+ hour drive back to Missouri.

After 2 or 3 of these trips for orthodontic appointments, I came to the conclusion that we were not saving ourselves any money and were just wearing ourselves out for no good reason. Traveling for orthodontist appointments was a huge inconvenience and large financial expenditure for us. Even though the treatment was paid for, we still had to pay for gas, food, and lodging, which ended up running about $200 a trip. Once I realized how much time and money we were spending to drive to MS to see Dr. Montgomery, I sought the services of a local orthodontist.

When we let SmartSmile know we were switching to a local orthodontist, I asked them what would happen to our account balance; we had paid in full but still had 9 months left of treatment. SmartSmile could not orw ould not give me an immediate response. It is my understanding that this is common practice when things like this happen is to forward any balance to the new orthodontist. I had to call SmartSmile several times before they let me know they were not going to refund any portion of our payments.

SmartSmile’s reasoning for this was that my family had received some sort of discount for the uninsured. I can find nothing in my paperwork that indicates we got any sort of discount. There is also no clause stating that if you change orthodontists, you forfeit your balance. The only thing useful I found in my paperwork is that I have a positive balance at SmartSmile. I overpaid by $7.50.

We paid Smartsmile $4500 over 3 years out of pocket for braces which averages to $125/ month. We had 9 months of treatment left with Dr. Montgomery therefore $125 x 9 = $1125. I feel like Dr. Montgomery owes us at least $1125.

When I took my child to her new orthodontist for an evaluation, he said she be in braces for at least another year, 6 months longer than what Dr. Montgomery recommended. We ended up paying $195 per month for 14 months for a total of $2730 with an additional cost of $370 for retainers which I believe were included in the SmartSmile package. Orthodontic work that should have cost $4500 has now cost well over $7000.

When SmartSmile refused to refund any of my balance, including the $7.50 overpayment, I filed a complaint with the Better Business Bureau. Smartsmile attempted to settle with me by offering me $157.50 which does not seem like a fair amount as it does not even cover the cost of one month of treatment at our new orthodontist.

I refused this settlement and never got another offer from SmartSmile. I also never even got the $7.50 they owe me. I feel like Dr. Montgomery is taking advantage of my lower economic status and my proximity to Mississippi. She knows I can’t afford a lawyer nor can I afford a trip to Mississippi to take her to small claims court. I am currently a single mom and a full-time student at Missouri State University. The only recourse I feel I have is to tell my story on the internet and warn other people about the shady business practices and questionable orthodontistry of SmartSmile.
