I came to Premier Sports Medicine for an appointment with their podiatrist regarding an ongoing difficulty. The only podiatrist listed on their office and website is Dr. David Mueller however, when I arrived for my appointment, I was met by a Dr. Joag, without explanation.

I brought two existing pairs of orthotics to the office. I explained to Dr. Joag that these orthotics were too wide/high in the arch to fit properly into shoes (other than hiking and running shoes) without shifting my left foot to the outside of the shoe, and that they had no resilience. She suggested that she would make a new pair of orthotics to address these problems. She also suggested that she keep one pair of existing orthotics to add a piece to make them more comfortable for my arthritic toe. I paid $495 for the new orthotics before leaving the office.

Several weeks later, I received a call to pick up the orthotics any time, so I dropped in on April 4. Instead of “picking up” the orthotics I was, without discussion, ushered into Dr. Joag’s office. When I tried to put the new orthotics in my shoes, I could not get them into my sneakers and the left one was made with a lift that actually made it impossible to use in any shoe! My old orthotics were just handed back, with no alteration and no comment.
In fact, this “session” with Dr. Joag was completely bewildering. She appeared to have no recollection of the first appointment, i.e., what she promised to accomplish with the new orthotics (the reason I agreed to buy a third pair of orthotics) or with he old ones!

A few days ago, I picked up the redone new orthotics. This time they were handed to me at the desk. They are now usable and, hopefully, an improvement over the two pairs I have, although I have not worn them enough yet to make a judgment.
On the same day, I received a statement from my insurer, listing a $118 office charge on April 4. Dr. Joag refused to rescind the charge. I contacted the insurer, to discover that they can not deny a doctor’s claim if the insured enters the doctor’s examination room. This was an eye-opener.
1. I “entered the doctor’s examination room” on April 4 to pick up my orthotics, not for an examination.
2. The orthotics were not usable. They did not fit into my sneakers and one was constructed in a way that it could not be used in any shoe.
3. The existing orthotics were untouched, contrary to what was promised during the first appointment.

I am flummoxed by their business practices. I, too, have a business and if I do something incorrectly, I feel it is my responsibility to correct it at my cost. This is particularly true if the product I make for the client can not be used because of how I made the product! This is a first for me.
They also might consider that a patient comes to you to see a specific doctor. Perhaps they ought to ask a patient for permission before substituting a doctor for an unknown (to the patient) doctor.

Since my insurer has no recourse, it would be fair for Premier to reimburse them for the unjustified $118 charge on April 4. It matters to me, as a part of the health care cost issues confronting all of us, to ensure that this kind of practice is not allowed to add to it.
