There are many types of martial arts and kickboxing workouts having similarities and purpose. . From the late 80s until present, I taught thousands of classes. I found shadow boxing worked well for over all fitness aerobic conditioning, and was motivating with great music and comradery of participants, but people did not have focus and real martial intent. What was needed was traditional equipment to provide real feedback or the movements and skills. Once one starts with the traditional floor work and the true science of kickboxing they will get more out each and every workout. The heavy bag training hones and develops safe execution of thousands of punches and kicks per class providing focused accuracy and resistive feedback for muscle power and endurance. Later when you return to a shadow boxing segment you are 100% more effective.
