I recently switched to Calistoga Pet Clinic from Napa Small Animal Hospital, which I'd used for almost 15 years (and my partner had used for years before that). The vets at Napa Small were always great, but as the practice has gotten busier over the years, they're simply over-crowded and often seem overwhelmed. Also, I live in Calistoga now, and the drive to Napa Small was hard on my cats, who hate to be in the car.

I can't say enough good things about Calistoga Pet Clinic. Their prices are very fair (though they're not a "discount" vet), the staff is exceptionally friendly and accommodating (even arranging for me to pick up one of my cats from boarding on a day when they're not officially open!), and while they're always quietly busy, there's seldom more than one or two people in the waiting room at any time, so it's easy to give each animal enough space to be comfortable, they can usually see animals on short notice when necessary (often the same day, even when it isn't an emergency), and the waits are seldom long.

Dr. Franquelin is very good at making sure I really understand what's going on, what my options are for any treatment, etc., and he's wonderful with even my extremely shy cat, who used to spend every vet visit shaking with fear.

Maggie, who's usually at the front desk, always remembers who I am and who my pets are, and is always a joy to deal with. I've just adopted a new puppy from the Sonoma Humane Society, and when I dropped by to pick up some medication for my cat, I asked Maggie if it would be okay to bring the puppy in and just have Maggie give her some treats, so she learned that the vet's office was a good place. Not only did Maggie say yes, but she also told me that they have a socialization program for dogs where the dogs can just come and hang out at the hospital (they just wander about with the staff and the other dogs), to get used to being there, get used to seeing lots of new people and animals, and get braver about unfamiliar sounds and sights.

This is truly a place where the welcoming small-town spirit of Calistoga is alive and well!
