When my family needed to be out of town for a weekend for a family event, I needed a qualified caregiver for my elderly dog, who has cancer. Our regular veterinarian does not offer boarding services, so I contacted Readington Animal Hospital. They wanted to do a complete exam on him before committing to boarding him, and that seemed like a very good idea. The day before our trip, Dr. Costlow did a complete examination on our dog, and I was pleased with the consultation, since he took plenty of time to answer all of my questions. He reassured me that my boy was perfectly stable and well enough to be left for the weekend. The very next day (a Friday), I dropped the dog off with his food and his medication (one pill per day). Not only did I write the amounts and directions on the form the hospital provided me with, I also write directly on the food, and provided his medication in a days-of-the-week pill box, with a label attached right to it with instructions. It was all very basic--one pill per day, at night; feeding twice per day.

I picked the dog up 3 days later, on Monday. The first thing I noticed was that the dog smelled TERRIBLE. I wasn't very concerned about this, because I had requested they not bathe him (for $38, I'd rather bathe him when I got him home). However, as soon as I let the dog out of the car at our house, he ran to the yard and shot a stream of bloody diarrhea out of his body. I was shocked, and ran inside to call Dr. Costlow. He was very unconcerned and asked if I had any Kaopectate I could give the dog. Kaopectate? I reminded him that the dog has cancer, and that the doctor himself had just evaluated him on Thursday and the dog was fine. "He's probably got an upset stomach from being boarded." I explained that it was LIQUID BLOOD that was coming out of the back end of the dog, and at that point he suggested that I bring him in to the office, but still did not seem very concerned.

I decided to bring my dog to my regular veterinarian, who took one look at him, hooked him up to intraveinous fluids, gave him an injection to stop the diarrhea, administered barium to seal off what was an obvious GI bleed, and took him off of his cancer medication, replacing it with two other pills for the next 5 days.

At this point, we are not sure what exactly happened while my dog was under Dr. Costlow's care. It could have been a virus, it could have been a reaction to his cancer medication (which he has been on for the last 6 months with no prior reaction). Regardless of the cause, Dr. Costlow not only DID NOT NOTICE that my dog was in a state of medical distress, but when I brought it to his attention, he remained unconcerned. And by the way--he has not taken the time to call to follow up to see how my boy is doing.

Bottom line: If for any reason you need to leave your pet overnight, you cannot be assured that he will be cared for in any more than the basic way at this veterinary hospital. If your pet has a medical condition, I beg you, PLEASE do your research and find another care solution.

On the outside this veterinary office and veterinarian seem wonderful. It's behind the scenes where things turn sour. They mistreat the animals that stay overnight or come in the back for procedures. Out of the owner's view, anything can happen. The office is only tidy in the front. The back is a complete mess and very unsanitary. The place is very expensive and the doctor hikes up the price on anything he can to squeeze every penny out of the owners, even if they can't afford it. I would not recommend this office to anyone due to the mistreatment and neglect the doctor has for the animals and, in turn, their owners.
