think they care a great deal about their customers and their pets and will do their best to give it to you straight but with care. they are busy which is a good thing it shows they are needed and wanted. the place is clean and the staff is as friendly as they can be in a busy work environment the focus is on your animal. dr himmestein had always tried to be fair and giving in my financial crisis and what vet does anything at a reduce price or treats wildlife for free. to me this is their way of giving back and it says a lot about who they are at spruce hill. kudos to them and the staff always working hard and sometimes with not so nice people. god bless them for all the good they do and will continue to do. for sherry who mothers, nutures and advices always with a loving heart. you've got my loyalty and my animals and my friends and my all my customers pets from perfect paws per our referral for all the good you at spruce hill do. thanks to all of you

After several years with this vet practice, we're not going back again. First of all, the vets are always too busy. We wait for awhile, which is OK--what isn't is that appointments always feel like a crisis. Whichever vet we saw, they were called away continually during our visit to answer the phone, to answer questions, and to check in on other patients. It has always seemed overbooked and frantic.

The other reason we're leaving is simply that their general philosophy doesn't match ours when it comes to caring for our dog. For instance, we do careful research and feed our dog high quality food recommended by a number of reputable sources. One vet cautioned us against feeding him anything the vet "hadn't heard of" and recommended a string of cheap dog chows including Alpo. I had the impression the vet was at least unwilling to find out more or give us the benefit of the doubt when it came to something he hadn't already heard of.

They also don't believe in what they would call excessive dental care for dogs, arguing persuasively that especially in older dogs general anesthesia can be risky. I do think, however, that thinking got in the way of adequate preventive care for our dog. For several yearly visits in a row I'd ask to have his teeth looked at, hoping they would be cleaned. I wish at this point we'd left their practice. Eventually, our dog got their attention when teeth had to be removed. He had many small teeth pulled (typical for small, older dogs). While he was out, his teeth may have been scaled but they were not cleaned to the degree I was expecting. I wasn't expecting them to be polished, I was simply expecting tartar to be removed. Only 8 months later we were back to have our dog treated for an abscessed tooth. He was back under general anesthesia, had more teeth removed and, I think only because I insisted, were his remaining teeth satisfactorily cleaned.

The younger staff have always been friendly and fully competent. The receptionist can be brusque and has occasionally given us misinformation.

I've had several dogs and many good vets over the years and across the country. The only one I've only ever been dissatisfied with is Spruce Hill Veterinary Clinic.

Ultimately, I feel a young, healthy animal could get good care. We're leaving for the accumulation of mistakes, inattention and differing philosophies.
