This is my account with Colonial Manor and how they over-medicated our dog and nearly killed him

This started back in April of this year when our dog had a serious bout of what they call strawberry jam which is a form of diarrhea. They put them on a 10 day supply of 250 mg metronidazole. After about two weeks it came back again so they put them on it for a full month of 250 mg. While he was on it our other dog contracted a bacteria and she was then put on a 10 day supply over the next several months.

Then, our 1st dog got it again and they put him on a 30 day supply of 500 mg Metronidiazole and then a 30 day supply of 1000 mg of Metronidiazole again a month later. The problem seem to stop while they were on it but then all of a sudden around day 25 our dogs back legs started giving out at him and he was walking squat like as the day went on and started to get worse.

I called them up to make an appointment. By the time I got there his front legs were also starting to act strangely. I came in and spoke to the young vet there who examined his reflexes and said we should do an x-ray I said okay they did and he said he shows some arthritis in his hip area and determined that the problem was as he called it “acute arthritis” and then suggested we get him into some therapy.
I said I never heard of that and it doesn’t sound reasonable that five minutes ago he’s absolutely fine and running and playing in five minutes later he has acute arthritis. I then asked him to this have anything to do with all the medicines he’s been on and off this for a year he said “100% No”.

We left and then as the day went on he started to get even worse. I looked his symptoms online and came across something called vestibular disease. Our dog had several of these symptoms. As I scroll down one of the causes said it was TOXICITY TO METRONIDIAZOLE ESPECIALLY IN HIGH DOSES. I also read online that the typical dose is between 7 mg per pound for one week and in persistent cases 30 days. For our dog that would be about 250 mg right now he was 400% higher than the typical dosage.

I called the veterinarian back and told him what I found and what he told me was “if I want to wean him off the drug I can do that”. I found this incredibly unnerving that he’s basically telling me to make a decision about my dog and the medicine they prescribed for him while I’m paying them for that service.

As the night wore on he continued to get worse and worse knuckling on his front legs he could barely stand it all and if you didn’t hold him while walking he would just fall over we decided to take him to the emergency 24 hour vet. I told him about the problem over the phone and I said it could be related to the Metronidiazole they asked me what the dosage was and how long he’s been on it as soon as I said a 1000 milligrams they said, WHAT???? BRING HIM IN IMMEDIATELY IM SURE HE HAS A TOXIC LEVEL OF IT IN A SYSTEM.

What disturbed me about the whole thing is that I tried to tell the veterinarian that I felt there could be an interaction with the drug that THEY WERE PRESCRIBING. He didn’t even take a moment to even think about it or look into it or ask anyone else there. He obviously clearly did not have any idea what the OVER PRESCRIBING of the medicine was doing to my dog.

I also spoke to a second vet and got the same response as soon as I said a 1000 milligrams for 30 days 4 different times, they were shocked and said yeah I’m sure that’s what the problem is and they put them on valium to help bring it down it took about 36 hours but he’s walking pretty normal right now and it only cost me $2000 for myself to diagnose and come up with a solution to a problem that should only cost $200

Im astounded that they literally had NO idea what the medicines they prescribe can do.

So no one there cared at all about what they did. I still had 5 more days of meds to give him If I continued Im sure I would have killed him or worse. Put him to sleep because he looked hopeless the way he would try to stand and fall over and have like mini-siezures. I thought he was dying. I thought it was over. It was HORRIFYING to watch your pet suffer like that and you have no answer and no one that cared to help.
No one even tried to make an effort to try to help us. It took two other vets to tell me this dosage would only have been used in EXTREME cases and would need to be monitored closely.

When I spoke to Dr Dave and told him what happened, he said he was leaving to head out but when he got back we would figure something out. Not surprisingly he never spoke to me again. He hid behind his staff that he cowardly used as a fence to avoid speaking to me.

This was our experience with Colonial Manor. Exactly as it happened. If you love your pet I would be very wary of their practices as not only are they poor but the clearly do not care about what happens to your pet Remember THEY CAUSED THE ISSUE AND I HAD TO FIGURE THAT OUT BECAUSE THEY COULDN’T or worse SIMPLY DIDN’T CARE. BEWARE
