THIS IS FOR BARBARA, who was the charge nurse for rehab in January 2012: When my son was 15-years old, he sustained a traumatic brain injury (TBI) from a car accident. As a middle-aged adult, he was admitted to your facility for training on his newly diagnosed Type 2 Diabetes. After three days, you called me at my home to accuse me of neglect. (I am 82-years old, and have been a widow for 26-years.) You suggested that, over the decades, my son has suffered, not from failures of the health care system, rather, from the neglect of family, in spite of our relentless search for help for him and his TBI. Barbara, you seemed to have NO understanding of patient autonomy, and the difficulty and frustration that a young person with a TBI can present to his family. You made judgements about our concern and care WITHOUT ever having had a conversation with me, or any members of my family. Please understand this (and I cannot believe I am having to tell you this--you are, after all, the health care professional): Injury and/or Illness IS NOT a one-time event. Every person who comes to you comes with a history, and to provide care that you might claim excels, takes time & listening & surely a suspension of judgement. This evaluation of you and your facility is being posted nearly 6 months after our two phone calls, as it has taken me this long to process my astonishment & hurt & fury at the way I felt evaluated by you. There was nothing in this "health care" process that felt like it was done in the best interest of my son. Rather, this process felt like it was an opportunity for you to move my son on and out, and blame me for his poor outcome. While you facility sports lovely art on the walls, and pretty clean rooms, 2-stars is far too high. You and your facilyt have yet to realize what really matters.
