Upon entry, you are met with a smile from the receptionist.. However, there was no wheelchair in the lobby for my mother. It took 25 minutes to get one for mom to enter on her first day. They have an excellent staff of LPN’s that manage medication. Due to their distractions, sometimes they run late, especially bedtime meds. Always under staffed, caregivers in the afternoon to evening shift (CNA) are usually teenagers 16 to 19. There is supposed to be 2 on each hall during day shifts and afternoon, especially 2 - 10 pm, there can only be one person to feed, bathe and put all residents to bed on a hall. It happened too often. Almost every shift had daily call ins as you expect from kids that age. The day charge nurse would not step in and physically help in our experience. On the rare event mom or I saw her in the halls, she usually was rude and always smelled like cigarettes. Having fallen one evening, it was 50 minutes before anyone responded to assist. Mom has no mental deficiencies, just physical, so I believe her. There is a large clock in the room. She had a wound that got infected also. On the weekends, the resident bathroom was often unsanitary. Visiting, I saw feces on top of the garbage. It should have been removed at once by staff. And, there was a dirty adult incontinence product with feces, not bagged, laying on the floor, There were multiple falls at the facility every week she was there, in large part because of under staff and over seemingly (not validated) medicated seniors at night. The MD for the facility has a high turn over rate (3 different in the first 6 months). He or his PA come once a week so they can not possibly really know the residents - and often mom’s orders were changed without speaking with her first to explain the reason and ask questions to assist with making the right decision. On the first weekend there, they immediately began changing a carefully orchestrated medicine combo while ignoring the world renowned Mayo specialists and pain management team who knew mom and her history. It interfered with her sleep, caused her anxiety and inhibited her care until we got the meds changed back to the specialists orders. That took almost a week. The PT/OT department has a lovely staff, but the equipment is limited and I believe they are limited to basic geriatric care. The day I moved mom out, they were again short staffed. The one CNA that helped at first was pulled from the room and got in trouble for being there. We then had zero assistance getting all her personal items together and her physically moved out. The only person visible was D. White, billing, who was standing in the doorway for some time. We could not get past her. Giving us the bill and a call the next day to discuss specifics would have been appropriate because the insurance payments were still pending. We were exhausted and overwhelmed since we had no help. If you can, find another facility. I removed my mother from the facility, she was not discharged, and would never, ever take her back. Her current care center is a great improvement.
