I had surgery for a macular hole, and was a bit apprehensive at first; my mom had the same surgery performed by an internationally respected expert formally at Johns Hopkins, and I felt pressure to be sure I was getting similar care. Certain of my mom's friends had poor outcomes using supposed experts in the VA Beach area, so picking a good surgeon is paramount to regaining vision. I'm not remotely connected to the medical profession, but I make it a point to educate myself about procedures I will be subjected to. In the end, I am absolutely convinced that Dr. von Fricken is the BEST at what he does. He may not appear to be as famous (if you tend to use the internet as your source for info), but it is clear that he has worked diligently to perfect his techniques so that his patients get the best result possible. Further, he is a real gentleman who cares about his patients as individuals. I will absolutely go back to him if/when this happens to the other eye, and if anyone else in my family has issues w/ their retina, Dr. von Fricken will get my recommendation.

One thing to consider if you are not a patient person (I am not!), stay away from the Fairfax office if you can. It is CRAZY and the waits seem interminable. Tysons, even if not convenient, is so much better especially early in the morning. Staff in both places is very nice, but Fairfax is just busy, busy, busy.
