A compete and utter waste of time not to mention the arrogance, condescension and superciliousness of the staff who acts as they were working for an infallible and superior practice. It is indeed a lucrative establishment that has very little to do with benefits to the patients.
I was billed for a level four visit which requires an all-time honored physical examination, a detailed patient history, and checking for septal defects, large tonsils, macroglosia, enlarged turbinates, long soft palate, possible vocal cords webs and skeletal deformities of the maxilla and mandible. None of these were performed. The simple office procedure of nasopharyngoscopy was complete ignored and is perhaps not even unavailable.
Oral appliances were dismissed a priori with the explanation that all they can do is to lower the setting on the CPAP machine, which no one in the office could explain me how it self-adjusted and under what conditions it self-adjusts. Ask probing questions and you will receive in the mail a letter that they do not want you as a patient.
The protocol for such an expensive sleep study calls for at least 7 hours during sleep and was indeed incomplete and in my opinion full of false negatives either because electrodes were not attached properly or because the software is unable to differentiate between artifacts, compensatory mechanisms and actual pathologies.
Member of the staff refused to disclose if the office had any relevant financial relationships with commercial interests and in particular with the makers of the CPAP machine, which is manufactured in Australia and can be bought from stores without prescriptions, most probably because it is not even considered a medical devise, and has a success rate of 33%. Yet it is promoted with great zest and enthusiasm and its promotion is billed as a level 4 visit.
The level 4 visit cannot be described in any other way but fraudulent.
In short, I lost additional sleep, I was conveniently requested to repeat the procedure a second time at astronomical rates, and all my questions regarding maxillo-mandibular appliances were conveniently ignored.
Notwithstanding the utter incompetence and arrogance I could sense, their web site shows a most complete, elaborate and impressive description of their services. Upon entering their office, a striking huge poster in the office describes their lofty ideals and impeccable professional services.
To recapitulate, I feel that I was given an incorrect diagnosis which was based mostly on a few numbers printed by the computer, I was given a wrong treatment with a machine that was set at much higher pressure than needed.
Once again, the CPAP machine I was given is manufactured in Australia and - considering its success rate and limitations, it can be bought without prescriptions as if it were a simple humidifier.
To understand why most doctors do what they do, and prescribe what they prescribe, simply follow the money.
