As we move through the different phases of life, we find we will eventually injure or wear out certain parts of our bodies. When this occurs we feel the need to find a physician who has a proven history and a distinguished reputation to assist us wikenth a particular treatment.

I was in Dallas caddying for one of my sons in a golf tournament about three years ago. I began having tremendous lower back pain. I was staying with a friend who gave me some "Aleve". It helped slightly but the next day my lower back pain was even more severe. That evening while I was lying in bed, I felt the pain in my lower back begin to move to the left side of my lower back, then down the inside of my left leg to just above my knee. The pain was excruciating . I had no idea what was happening to me. The next morning I took some more Aleve and headed out to caddy in the last round of the tournament. The pain was so intense that I could barely finish.

On the drive back to Austin, the inside of my left thigh and my lower back ached so much that I didn't know what to do. My only thought was to call Dr. Matt Hummell and explain what was happening. He said to be in his office at 8:30 the next morning. He said it sounds as though I had a pinched nerve in my lower back caused by a lumbar disk herniation. I'd known Dr. Hummell from past golf outings.

I met with him on Monday morning at 8:30, explained what was happening, and Dr. Hummell ordered an MRI.

When Dr. Hummell called me on Monday evening, he explained to me that the prognosis he had discussed with me that morning had been verified by the MRI results. I had a herniated disk in my lower back. Dr. Hummell recommended that I should first meet with a pain doctor to see if I could find some relief that way and his office set up an appointment for the next afternoon. I went for a cortisone shot and felt some relief but it was short-lived. In about 24 hours all of the pain had returned. I spoke with Dr. Hummell again and we discussed my options. I asked when I could have the necessary and inevitable surgery as I was certain that my back was not going to get any better on its own.

He set up the surgery for that Friday morning. He met me in the hospital at 7:30 AM Friday morning and asked if the pain was any better. I answered "no", it was not any better. He said that when I come out of surgery, the pain would be gone. When I saw Dr. Hummell in the recovery room around 11:00 AM, the pain was gone. I was still heavily medicated but felt better and was so relieved to have the surgery completed.

I was dismissed from the hospital at around noon and home immediately thereafter. I was on the prescribed pain medication through Sunday night and did not have to take any after that. To this day, nearly three years later, I have had no recurring pain in my back or leg.

I am an avid golfer and I began taking full swings and playing golf five weeks after my surgery.
It is so satisfying to think back and recall when I was in so much pain and wondering what was wrong and whether it could ever be corrected.
