Doctor Spinaris is probably one of the worst doctors I have ever encountered. As her patient I met Dr. Spinaris once, in the fall of 2005.I was directed to her by my primary after I have been extremely sluggish and had a blood test come back with abnormal thyroid levels. Dr. Spinaris diagnosed me with what she called "Thyroiditis", thyroiditis is a term used to describe the swelling of the thyroid and isn't a simple condition, it is the title of a category under which many thyroid problems that cause swelling of the thyroid fall under. However, she described the condition to me as the thyroid swinging back and forth between hyper and hypo thyroidism. After that one visit and her seeing one blood test she put me on a medicine that I believe was called PKU. After that I never heard from , or saw here again. She sent me for random blood tests but never gave me any feedback as to whether my condition was the same, better, or worse. When I would call to try and ask if I should still be taking the medicine or what I should be doing she was unreachable. So I finally made a risky decision and decided to stop taking the medicine to prevent dependence, in August 2006.

In January 2008, I had a blood test done which slightly indicated hyperthyroidism after I expressed fatigue to my gynocologist. I was directed to another endocrinologist by a friend of my mother's who has had wonderful experiences with her. She explained to me that thyroiditis is only swelling of the thyroid and is usually caused by a virus. She said that viruses only attack a thyroid is there is something wrong with it already. Dr. Spinaris should have looked to the heart of the problem and wondered what caused the thyroiditis in the first place. This new doctor also told me that the medicine I was put on is very extereme for what I was experiencing. After doing a sonogram of the thyroid and looking at a very simple test which showed anti-bodies against my thyroid this new doctor was able to tell me the problem was chronic autoimmune thyroiditis. My immune system is making antibodies which are attacking my thyroid causing it to swell and then be hypo after thyroid hormones are released during swelling. This has let to one lobe of my thyroid being bigger than the other and if it is not watched I could grow a goiter or have my thyroid damaged to a point where it no longer functions properly. Thankfully, if it gets to where this is starting to happen all I have to do is take a thyroid hormone and everything will be prevented.

After the ease with which my new endocrinologist found the problem I see Dr. Spinaris in a worse light than before. At first I just thought she was an awful doctor because she didn't follow up with her patients, was impossible to contact, and pretty much forgot I existed. But now I know that she also put me on a medication I didn't need to be taking and that was extreme, told me I had something that I didn't, and basically didn't care to find out what was wrong with me at all. The thing that probably makes me angriest is that my new endocrinologist told me this condition is very common in my area and they see it all the time in patients.
