Dr. Falk was my mother's trusted allergist for more than 20 years. Unfortunately, the fact that he had her visiting him for allergy shots almost weekly for decades with no real improvement in her symptoms was not the worst example of his incompetence as a physician. What I will never forgive him for is that when, a year ago, she developed a slight wheeze, he immediately diagnosed asthma (which she had never had) without so much as a chest x-ray. As the year proceeded, my mother's breathing difficulties grew worse and he simply prescribed round after round of antibiotics, inhalers and steroids. None of these helped at all but he did not think to question his diagnosis of asthma until 9 months later when her lung capacity was at 50%, she was constantly short of breath, and coughing, and we begged her to ask him to do a chest x-ray. It was then that we discovered that she had pleurisy due to a collapsed lung caused by stage 4 lung cancer. A week earlier, another MD in his office had listened to her chest and said her lungs were clear. Had Dr. Falk not been so negligent, perhaps my mother's cancer could have been caught earlier and cured.
