I started receiving care from Dr. Capelli's practice partner, Dr. Caruso, when I was 17 and needed a pelvic exam to start taking birth control pills. I didn't really "click" with him, but didn't have any reason to be unhappy, so I resigned myself to once-a-year unpleasantness to keep receiving my prescriptions.

And now, I'm going to talk about something very painful, but necessary with regards to women's gynecological care. Two years later, I was raped by an acquaintance. As part of my follow-up care from the hospital where I had my rape kit done, I was told to schedule an appointment with my regular provider. I went through the motions and called the office to schedule an appointment with Dr. Caruso. At the time, he was out of town, so the scheduling nurse placed me with Dr. Capelli.

I can't remember exactly when I saw him following the assault (because it was 10 years ago this month that it happened) but I do remember being very afraid. I was completely traumatized, unable to talk about the experience, and just very numb, uncomfortable with meeting a new man in an enclosed space who would want to do an exam. The first words out of his mouth were, "I'm Dr. Capelli. It's nice to meet you, and I'm so sorry for what happened to you."

Now, as an established patient of his, I can tell you his appointments average about 30 minutes. But this day, he spent almost an hour just talking with me about my life and what had happened, and what to expect moving forward, which would be monthly appointments for six months. At the time, I was extremely confused--hadn't I just come in for a pelvic exam and blood work? The last thing I wanted to do was talk. A decade later, I can see that he was trying to build trust, and to give me some sense of power and control in the wake of having all of mine taken. Only after we had established some trust did he gently prod me about the exam and panel.

I won't pretend that the series of appointment were incredible, because they weren't. In that immediate period trying to recover from what had happened to me, they were among the most difficult experiences of my life. But what stood out to me was his compassion and kindness. He didn't even know me, and he was clearly invested in my well-being. After that very first visit, I officially requested to be transferred to his care from Dr. Caruso's.

My only regret is that I have a daughter of my own now, born while I was living in another state, so Dr. Capelli wasn't involved in my prenatal care or her delivery. But I did send his office a birth announcement and a thank-you card for helping me to get to the place where it was possible. There was a time where my future didn't seem likely to involve love ever again, let alone going through with birthing a child.

I would be remiss if I didn't take the opportunity to acknowledge how incredible his staff is. Esmeralda and Angela have been there for 10 years, and even though there is a part of me that hopes that they don't immediately recognize me because of experience as a rape survivor, I have always been deeply touched by their personalized care.

I can only hope that Dr. Capelli is nowhere near retirement, because I am not confident I will ever be able to build the same rapport with any other provider. He is an exceptional healer, gynecologist, and human being to whom I will be forever grateful.

This doctor should not have a license to practice. He had several opportunities to catch a life treatening disease. Upon getting a second opinion from another doctor, the disease was diagnosed in ten minutes.
