I wish I could offer some comment on Dr. Chen's skills as a physician, but before I could make my initial appointment I was told by his receptionist NOT to seek out his services.
“I don't think this is the doctor for you,” she said.
This came after a lengthy interrogation about my insurance, whether I had met my deductible for the year, my current medication, and a warning about the co-pays. That last one was an insinuation, really, that I'd better be able to furnish cash at the time of service.
These questions, or variations of them, are the sort of thing I might expect at the office, after arranging for an appointment. But the initial appointment, I was quickly learning, was predicated on a greedy receptionist's interrogation about just how much cash I would be able to furnish the business.
I interrupted her to remind her of the alleged nobility of the medical profession – “Why are you asking me all these questions about money?” I asked. “Shouldn't we also be talking about my medical needs and helping me heal? That's what being a doctor is about, right?”
That's when the receptionist hung up on me.
I called her back and she dropped the bomb:
“I don't think this is the doctor for you,” she said.
I have a strong suspicion the receptionist is Dr. Chen's wife.
I hope they make lots of money.
I guess that's what being a doctor is all about.
