I was recommended to Dr. Leatherwood for cosmetic purposes. I called to get their pricing on veneers, and I was told that they do not give that information over the phone, but to come in for a FREE consultation. Since it was free, I agreed to come in so that I could get a price for my procedure.

I arrived and filled out normal new patient paperwork. I was taken back to see Dr. Leatherwood. He looked at my teeth, recommended 4 veneers on my front uppers, and then told his hygentist to take molds of my teeth. He said that if I decided to go through with the procedure, great, but if not, no big deal and that they would just toss the molds. After the molds were taken, I was brought into a different room where he gave me the approx. price of each veneer and was told that a lab in Virginia would be used to produce the veneers. I thanked him and told him I would be in touch. He then handed me a religious pamphlet. I went to the front desk, asked if they needed anything else of me, they said no, and I left.

Weeks later, I receive a statement of benefits from both my dental and health insurances. I was shocked, as I had not had a cleaning or gone to the doctor in months. When I opened them, I saw that Dr. Leatherwood's office had billed each of them for $86, and that this exam took the place of my 6 month cleaning exam. I was livid, as this was supposed to be nothing more than a free consult. I called the office and they said that they never offered me anything for free and that I had to pay (again, I would have never agreed to anything but a free consult for a cosmetic procedure and would have asked if it was free if they had not said it was free). I have since begun the appeals process with both insurance providers.

Soon after, I receive an estimate in the mail for my proposed treatment. The estimate showed my insurance covering most of the procedure. I was shocked again, as I was told insurance won't cover cosmetic procedures. I called their office, only to be told that it was a mistake and that I would indeed be responsible for full coverage. At this point, I told them I would no longer be using their services. They wished me well and that was that.

Fast forward to 2 months later. I receive a bill from their office, this time for $280 for my molds/impressions. I was NEVER told that I would be charged for these impressions, nor was I given any choice on having them done. I never consented to any such charge or service, and was given the impression that this was included in the consultation so that I could physically see what my teeth were to look like and then make an informed decision. Further, I was told that a lab in Virginia would be used to create the veneers -- this bill stated that the molds were sent to a lab in California.

This office is one huge scam. They lie to get you into their office, don't tell you of any charges, and try to cover their scam with a religious pamphlet -- giving the customer a false sense of security. Further, it seems as if they decided to charge me for these molds because they learned that they wouldn't get my $5000 for the cosmetic services, so they are looking to charge me for anything they can. I have opened a case with BBB and will go to small claims court if need be. Please AVOID this dentist at all costs! To them, FREE = $360+ of a patient's hard earned money. BEWARE.
