The dentist who saw me - ANTHONY PAYNE - on a Tuesday evening in May 2012 told me my teeth were not in that good shape (due to grinding at night), which is fine, but what he said to me looking into my eyes is what has been haunting me for over 6 months - EVERY DAY SINCE THEN. I am half Asian - he had asked me since my name is Japanese and I told him my dad was Japanese and my mother is of French Canadian ancestry. He looked into my mouth commented on my teeth (alarmingly), looked into my eyes, and said 'It must be all that sushi you've been eating'.
Now, I grew up in a mixed race family in Jamaica Plain during the 1960's and 70's, and I did not have a very happy childhood when it came to racial prejudice. This Dr. Payne invoked those bad memories and shocked me with the insensitivity and passive aggressive bigotry? /racial stereotyping of his words. In my opinion, he is not worthy of practicing Dentistry - what he said to me has affected me deeply and has not diminished but only festered in me since that Tuesday evening appointment in May 2012. I warn anyone, particularly someone who is Asian (which is a a significant proportion of people in Quincy), about this monster dentist. Not only did Dr. ANTHONY PAYNE insult me with a racially charged comment, he neglected to tell me that I had a cavity on tooth #19. I just found out about that when I called to get Payne's name from the office.
In fairness, I only told Dr. MacDonald's staff about this incident today, and I have never had a problem with Dr. MacDonald or his staff until this last appointment. I will see Dr. MacDonald one more time, but if Dr. Payne continues to work there, I will not continue (and will even stand outside with a sign to let everyone know what Payne said to me).
