I went to Concord Carlisle with a dental emergency, and asked if they were part of the PPO Network for Delta Dental. The woman I spoke to said they "took my insurance" and not to worry. Months later, I found that they were NOT part of the PPO network, and that I was billed for nearly one thousand dollars of care that I would never have agreed to had I known this beforehand. They can bill to Delta, but they weren't part of the network at all.
I called back to complain, and spoke to a woman named Bonnie, who assured me that it was all a mistake, that they WERE part of the network and that she would straighten it out with the insurance company. She called back a few days later to tell me that she was wrong - that they're not part of the network. She apologized, and said she would have the dentist call me.
A week later I was contacted by someone else, a woman named Barbara, who informed me that Bonnie didn't know what she was talking about. Barbara, it turns out, was the woman who'd admitted me in the first place. After 10min of circular discussion, in which she repeatedly told me that they DO accept Delta Dental, she finally admitted that she had NO IDEA what networks they were a part of! Why couldn't she have told me this in the first place? A simple "you'll have to check with your provider" would have been more than adequate, but instead I got a misleading answer that "we take Delta Dental, but we don't know the specifics of your plan." I know the specifics of the plan. What I don't know is whether or not they're part of the plan in the first place! I pressed, asking her why she hadn't been willing to just say "I don't know", she refused to admit any wrongdoing, told me it's the patient's responsibility to know this before they walk in the door (buyer beware), and told me I'd be paying the money and that the conversation was over. When I asked to have a payment plan set up and sent to me, she needed to take down my address - god knows why didn't have it already.
As someone who walked in with a dental emergency, I feel exploited by their unwillingness to clearly answer my questions at the time, or to admit to a lack of information on their part. They have random people handling billing questions, and then being contradicted by other people. Even giving them the benefit of the doubt, and assuming only good intentions, this smacks of complete administrative incompetence, and terrible customer service. A shame, too, since the dentist who treated me was excellent.
