I saw Dr. Taub on March 5, 2010 for an eye exam and contact fitting. He changed the prescription in my right eye from -2.50 to -3.00 as well as the contact itself to Dailies AquaComfort Plus. The prescription for my left eye, according to him, did not change. Both brands of contacts are manufactured by CIBA Vision Corp.

Also on the date of my exam, he gave me one new pair of the AquaComfort Plus with the new prescription in his office to wear and try out. Since my vision was affected by the drops he also put in my eyes that day, I did not think that one day was a fair trial, so I called his office and asked for several days supply of contacts to test. I was given a 5-day supply for my right eye only so, not only did I not get to test my left eye with the new contact, I now have a surplus amount of right contacts and not enough for my left eye. My request for contacts for the left eye to try, despite the fact that I paid $75 for a contact fitting, were refused.

On March 29, 2010 I called him so that I could discuss with him, and in order to make an informed decision, about the eye care he provided on March 5, 2010; specifically the contact lenses that he recommended that I switch to. I was currently using the Focus Dailies which he recommended that I start using in 2008. When I questioned him as to why I needed the newer (and much more expensive) brand of contacts that he was recommending, particularly when I was not having problems with the old lenses, he replied that “they are only a few dollars more”, and because of the potential for me to develop cataracts in my right eye (which he just discovered at my last exam), and the fact that I had a scleral buckle for a detached retina more than 14 years ago, that I could "go blind in my eye" if I did not use the newer product he was recommending (and also sells).

When I questioned him, with shock, that not using the new product could cause me to go blind, he responded in an annoyed tone of voice that he “did not want to argue with me and to go ahead and do what I wanted to do”. I then explained to him that I was questioning his recommendation because I did not want to pay more money for contacts that I might not really need. I also went on to say that I did not appreciate him getting testy with me when I was only trying to get information to make an informed decision.

His response was to tell me to get a new doctor and then he hung up on me!

He subsequently sent me a letter essentially saying the the same thing; get a new doctor.

To say that I am appalled to have been treated in such an unprofessional, rude and insulting manner is an understatement. But to play on the fear of a patient by telling them they could go blind in order to goad them into purchasing a more costly product is unconscionable.

Rest assured that I have no intention of ever entrusting the care of my vision to Dr. Robert Taub again!
