Overall, if you are high risk and don't mind being a "number", it appeared to me as if this practice is great for you. I am not high risk. I don't think the doctors could have identified who I was in a line up.

Dr. Merkin and King were kind. Dr. Merkin's bedside manner was superior to Dr. Kings. That's not to say that Dr. King was cold. It was just evident that she was very busy- too busy.

The wait time was ridiculous. There were some nights I'd be there from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m for a 3 minute visit with the doctor and a 10 minute ultrasound. This may be due to that fact that scheduled appointments were never clear. The doctor would tell me the next visit would require an ultrasound, however, it wouldn't be scheduled upon arrival (due to either the doctor's error or the front desk), and I'd have to simply wait. Also, it was very clear that appointment times were double booked. There were far too many women in the waiting room.

There were a few occasions of miscommunication between the nursing staff and the doctor that resulted in me coming in for unnecessary visits. The doctor would still see me and checked the baby's heart beat, but of course it cost myself and my insurance company more money and wasted precious time.

There was an issue of obtaining my records from another provider. When I asked to confirm that these very specific records were obtained, a nurse assured me they were. Months later, it was discovered that the these specific records were not obtained. Although I lived in several different areas and had several different doctors in the last 5 years, which inevitably resulted in the transfer of many pages of documentation, I wish the nurse would not have assured me that the doctor received exactly what she needed rather than assuming the records were in the grouping of the many records received.

The ultrasound technician is a delight. There are 2 wonderful women who work the front desk. Another woman was not as understanding, and gave me a bit of attitude when I tried to explain my concerns. I was simply trying to communicate these concerns for the sake of bettering the office in a very kind manner. She did not seem concerned in the slightest.

My tipping point in decided to transfer care to a different group was when it became evident that I would not get the birth I desired. I'm going to attempt a natural birth with low medical intervention. It seemed as if that would not be probable under this group's care. I understand that this is a teaching hospital, but I got the impression a resident and student doctors on their OBGYN rotation would do almost all the work, wouldn't honor my requests, and Dr. King or Merkin would only be there to catch the baby.

I received the, "It's good to research, but I'm the doctor and you're the patient and we're going to do whatever it takes to make sure the baby comes out healthy" speech. Of course this is true. I would never jeopardize the health of my baby. I just want to make sure I give INFORMED consent for each medical intervention that may occur, not just a blanket "Whatever you say, Doctor." I am aware of the pressure these doctor's receive from insurance companies. Unfortunately, this is a business, and I am a paying customer. I just didn't believe that my best interest would always be their primary concern. Based on how busy the office is for appointments, I had a very strong feeling if things were not progressing on their watch, intervention would ensue.

When I decided to transfer care, I told Dr. Merkin my concerns with the administration. She was very understanding and apologetic. It appears as if she does want to make sure things like these do not happen again. She was also respectful of my wishes to transfer care to obtain the birth I desire.

In sum:

Pros- Clean office in a great hospital with OBGYN's who seem very knowledgeable and confident in their abilities. Would recommend for women who fall in the "high risk" category or women who do not weight a personalized birth high on their priority list.

Cons- Long wait times, administrative issues, miscommunication amongst staff, and lack of confidence in receiving the birth I desire (assuming I do not develop legitimate medical need for intervention). Would not recommend for women who are healthy and wish for a more intimate birthing experience with low medical intervention.

Their office was one of the quietest, most peaceful places I've ever visited. I was able to relax very easily. Remembering clients by name is not a very big concern for the staff here because every time I come in for an appointment I have to remind them who I am (however I only go once a year). It would be nice to be recognized at least once is all I'm saying. Everything they told me in the beginning ended up turning out exactly the way they said it would. They were able to provide me everything they promised me. I've never doubted their abilities. Dr. Merkin is very kind, compasionate and understanding.
