Dr. Smoot is the best physician/surgeon in the whole wide world, in my book. He and his wonderful team at TX Orthopedics have worked so hard over the past 2+ years to make me whole again.

Following a foot and ankle injury in 2014, I first was treated by snother orthopedic surgeon who, though great, wasn’t subspecialty trained to treat or surgically deal with the extent of the injuries I’d sustained, injuries MRI & subsequent ankle arthroscopy revealed to be worse than what ER plain film x-rays had originally suggested, That orthopedic surgeon then referred me to his 1st choice, Dr. Smoot, who is fellowship trained as a Foot & Ankle subspecialist orthopedic surgeon (plus, I believe, in Knee and Sports Medicine subspecialties as well)..

In late 2015, Dr. Smoot successfully fused my ankle but a year later, while overseas, I further injured that foot/ankle. 6 months later, Dr. Smoot surgically addressed that injury.

Unfortunately, that surgery (and perhaps the 1st fusion had as well) became complicated by an underlying health issue that prevented proper healing and was, as yet, undiagnosed. Instead of healing, I became plagued with unexplained debilitating pain for well outside the normal post-op timeframe/window.

At that point Dr. Smoot and Mike/PA began to rein me in a bit closer, stuck by and encouraged me - and never once expressed even a hint of doubt in me or my symptoms - including times when even I’d begun to doubt my own self and worthiness.

Together they tenaciously worked over months to solve the puzzle I presented - truly seeking to help me heal and/or just feel better. Dr. Smoot is so incredibly empathetic that there were times I’d swear I was seeing my pain in his eyes - PA Mike’s too - as they watched me hobble into the exam room.

As for his staff - not once did any questions or requests go unanswered nor did any problem ever go unaddressed - indeed, all communications received prompt, articulate and professional responses - frequently with an added sweet personal touch of empathy &/or concern.

Ultimately, after ordering a bunch of tests, Dr. Smoot diagnosed the underlying condition which interfered with proper healing and I went into a non-union. He then surgically addressed, revised and fix it = PERFECTLY! Dr. Smoot’s expertise and skill in performing that revision surgery very likely saved my lower leg from amputation and, for that, plus his sweet nature and tenacious care - I will be forever indebted to, and in awe of, him.

NIH website states the revision technique Dr. Smoot performed requires expertly trained surgical skills due to greater inherent risks involved on multiple levels (it’s a tricky operation, in other words), but NIH also definitely favored it in situations like mine as it increases the odds of proper healing and good long-term outcomes.

In addition to obviously being smart, highly trained and skilled - Dr Smoot is also such a humble, kind and thoughtful man in whom I had, and will always have, complete trust. That’s why, with great confidence in Dr. Smoot, my husband and I didn’t hesitate in going through it all again. We were certain that if anyone could fix me up, Dr. Smoot was our guy who could, would and did! I’d never consider going to anyone else (why would I?).

Bottom line, Dr. Smoot is quite simply THE BEST - as is Mike Fields, PA + staff and all the wonderful caring people at Texas Orthopedics. I dearly love and shall never forget any of them.

Intelligence, skill, empathy and integrity personified - that’s Dr. Smoot and you’re sure to find his crew at Texas Orthopedics mirrors those same qualities as you “Recover, Heal, Excel!” ...<-Their perfectly suited motto!!!

To be brief on this review, I had meniscus surgery in March 2010. I saw this doctor, in person, approximately 3 times. Most of my visits were with his physicians assistant ONLY. After my surgery, I asked no less than 3 times whether I needed to have physical therapy. Each time the answer was NO. I was very upset that this information was given to me by the PA and NOT the doctor. Seven months later, I still felt very unstable in my walking and I was having pretty much constant pain or aching in my knee. I finally decided to see an orthopedic surgeon in Houston. He absolutely recommended physical therapy and commented that he ALWAYS recommended therapy with this type surgery. I am slowly building up strength in my hamstrings, but I still have a way to go since I was so late in starting the therapy.

I would not recommend this doctor to anyone. When I did see him he was in the room for probably no more than 3 to 5 minutes......if that.
