I was seen by Dr. William Johnson for a rotator cuff injury in my right shoulder, and was treated very well by him and his staff. Of course, at that time I had gainful employment and health insurance. I was given a cortisone shot to help my shoulder, and given a prescription for pain medication. I was referred to physical therapy in order to see if I could avoid surgery, which proved to be extremely painful and I could not bear what exercises were recommended. In the 1 month that followed, I had refilled this prescription 3 times, for a total of 105 pills in a 30 day period. This averages to 3.5 pills per day - less than the bottle of medication had instructed me to take (take one pill every 6 to 8 hours for pain). Shortly after (1 month) this office visit, I lost my employment and health coverage due to the bad economy. At this time, I was instructed that I would need to reschedule an appointment to see Dr. William Johnson again to determine a course of action and be able to refill any prescriptions. This prescription was the only thing that had allowed me to sleep for more than 3 to 4 hours per night because of the intense pain I was in for a 2 year period. I explained to his staff that I could not afford to pay for an appointment fee, let alone even the gas to drive the short distance to his office, roughly 15 miles. I wrote his office explaining my situation, and Dr. William Johnson wrote back explaining that his office could no longer provide orthopedic services to me because of my alleged abuse of narcotics. I can understand not wanting to fuel a drug induced patient, but maybe they should have seen that after two years of not being able to get one night of rest, I was extremely relieved to finally get 6 to 8 hours of rest. The only other thing I have to say is this - the label on the bottles of hydrocodone that I was receiving said to take one pill every 6 to 8 hours; that is a daily total of 3 to 6 pills per day. I took an average of 3.5, so how was I abusing his orders? I understand not using pain medications as effective management for treating an injury, but when it allows mobility during the course of a day and a simple good night's rest, does that not constitute what relief is? I wish I did not have to write this about him, because I was treated well before I lost my employment and health insurance. After receiving his letter. I felt compelled to share my story with anyone who cares. If you are reading this, thank you for taking the time to read, and I would definitely recommend Dr. William Johnson for any orthopedic services you may be needing, but do not try it without being wealthy and/or insured.
