Our adopted daughter was becoming increasingly obese as a kindergartener. Neither my husband nor I have ever struggled with obesity, and we know nothing about our daughter's biological parents' health history.

Our pediatrician recommended Karen Marschel. Our daughter was just over 3' tall at the time, and weighed 70#. Ms. Marschel recommended no changes whatsoever to our daughter's diet, and encouraged us to feed her 6 times per day - 3 full meals plus 3 snacks with no restrictions. In fact, she discouraged us from restricting her diet in any way.

By the time our daughter was 7 (1st grade), she was 3'6" tall and weighed 82#. She could no longer wear clothes "off the rack" - everything had to be specially made. Fortunately, she has always been an active child or heaven only knows how much she would have weighed. At 82#, we restricted her diet. After a year, she was at a much healthier weight, though she continues to battle weight gain. She went from a size 16/18+ to a size 10.

I would never recommend Karen Marschel to anyone. It is amazing to me that she could look at a child who clearly needed to lose 1/3 of her total body weight and recommend 6 meals/snacks per day with no restrictions. She charged us nearly $1,000 for her advice (1 consultation).

Also, when the recommendation you recieve from your health care provider feels wrong - go see someone else. We had little understanding of our child's obesity and sadly, we were hesitant to go against the recommendation. We should have. We did our daughter a disservice by not questioning or seeking additional advice.
