About

Brooke Winner, MD

Dr. Winner is a fellowship trained Minimally Invasive Gynecologic Surgery specialist and professor at Washington University in St. Louis. She performs a high volume of minimally invasive surgery for fibroids and endometriosis. In addition, she is paid by the hospital to assist and teach these techniques to other general OB/GYNs in the community. Benefits of minimally invasive surgery include less pain, shorter hospital stay, faster recovery, and fewer complications. According to Dr. Winner, "In the hands of skilled surgeons, a minimally invasive approach is possible for almost all women. If you have been told you are not a candidate for a minimally invasive surgery, and your doctor is planning on making a large incision, we have second opinion appointments available." She also adds, "If your doctor is already planning on a minimally invasive procedure, make sure they have adequate training and ask them how many of these surgeries they perform per year." Dr. Winner wants patients to feel informed and comfortable with their decision to proceed with surgery when they leave the office. She stresses, "A doctor's appointment should include education on your diagnosis and a discussion about the full range of treatment options, in order to allow a woman to make the best decision for herself. If surgery is planned, your doctor should go over in detail what to expect before, during and after surgery." Call for an appointment or second opinion and get on the road to feeling better today.

Services Dr. Winner performs a high volume of minimally invasive gynecologic surgery including laparoscopic hysterectomy (removal of the uterus), laparoscopic myomectomy (removal of uterine fibroids), and laparoscopic excision of endometriosis. Most of these are either same day surgery or just one overnight stay in the hospital. For most women with benign (non-cancerous) gynecologic conditions, the decision to have surgery is a quality of life issue. Surgery is often an option when you have tried treatment with medication and it did not work, or you did not tolerate the side effects, or if treatment with medication is unlikely to work given your particular situation. In your office visit, Dr. Winner provides education on your diagnosis with pictures and reviews the full range of treatment options, in order to allow you to make the best informed decision for yourself. In all cases, the goal is to resolve your problem with minimal disruption to your life. If you elect to have surgery, Dr. Winner will go over in detail the risks of surgery and what to expect including: any preoperative testing you may need, what to do the day before surgery, what to expect the morning of surgery, what exactly will be done during surgery, where your incisions will be, what (if anything) will be removed, how long the surgery is expected to take, what to expect when you wake up, what medications will be given for pain control, how many nights you will stay in the hospital (if any), postoperative restrictions, things to look out for at home, how long you should expect to be off work, and when your postoperative visits will be. If you are considering having gynecologic surgery, but are uncomfortable with your decision, or feel like your doctor did not explain things properly, please call for a second opinion appointment today.
