About

Nyingma Institute

Kum Nye (Tibetan yoga) is described in general terms in the Vinaya, where the Buddha suggests ways for monks to combat the effects of mental fatigue and physical weariness. Massage is among the methods mentioned. In Tibet, Kum Nye was developed both as a way of healing diseases that result from blockage of energy, and as a preliminary to advanced yogic practices. This system, however, was not well-known or systematized, and was not generally practiced in the monasteries. Even the oral tradition emphasized the aspects of breathing and massage rather than movement exercises.

At the risk of sounding cheesy, I really can't say enough good things about the Nyingma Institute and their life-changing yoga and meditation classes and retreats. Every time I've taken a class or done a program I've come away feeling like I've learned so much.

If you've never tried Tibetan yoga (Kum Nye) before, I definitely recommend it. It's very gentle and meditative and great for tuning in to your body. It's also very simple to learn as a beginner. The Institute also offers classes in self-massage that teach dozens of points on the body that you can use to trigger deep relaxation.

The Institute is located just north of the UC Berkeley campus, but I'm always surprised at how I feel like I'm miles away when I'm there. They have a beautiful meditation garden with roses and a waterfall and a great view of the Golden Gate bridge and San Francisco skyline.

They also have a center called Ratna Ling up in Sonoma County if you really want to get away on retreat.
