Aging Skin / Sun Damage

Carmen Laronn, MD

Understanding the complexity of the aging process will allow you to better understand the reason why a combination of integrated treatments are usually required for best results.

In your 30′s collagen and elastin production is beginning to slow. Fine wrinkling and mild pigmentary changes appear. Make up is usually not necessary. Microdermabrasion, chemical peels along with derma fillers and Botox can dramatically improve appearance at this age. Acne programs may be necessary for acne or oily skin and mesorejuvenation facial for premature aging.

In your 40′s hormones begin to fluctuate effecting pigmentation, elasticity, and thickness of the skin. Wrinkling increases from photo-aging, motion and loss of volume. Small capillaries may be evident, making the skin look blotchy and rashy. Sun or age spots appear giving the skin a patchy, uneven color. The skin thickness and elasticity decrease and scatter areas of thickened skin make the skin feel rough, irregular, and dry. Premalignant spots may start to appear. Foundation is usually worn. A variety of resurfacing agents such as medical grade peels to ablative and non-ablative laser treatments will make a large difference in appearance along with derma fillers and Botox. Mesorejuventation will stimulate the regeneration of skin cells. A regular preventive/corrective regimen every 3-4 months is usually necessary to maintain ones best skin health and appearance.

In your 50′s, 60′s and beyond you will encounter all of the problems mentioned earlier along with significantly more drooping due to an overall loss of volume in the supporting structures that makes the skin redrape and create deep creases. The skin gets very uneven with extreme variation from very thick to very thin areas. Wrinkles and sagging develop throughout along with redness and dryness. The color changes to yellow or grey and skin malignancies appear frequently. Make up cannot be worn because it cakes and cracks. Along with treatments mentioned for the younger age groups, more intensive intervention is usually required such as micro laser peel or fractional laser resurfacing along with lipostructure or liquid non-surgical face-lift. Thermalift will improve skin tightness and contouring. Thermafractional is the newest integrated technology that achieves a 3 dimensional skin tightening and resurfacing. Mesotherapy is used for dissolving baggy, puffy eyelid fat, jowls and neck/chin definition.
