Graduated medical school (Witwatersrand Medical School, Johannesburg South Africa) in 1978. Completed residency and compulsory military service as well as completing Master of Medicine and becoming a Fellow of the South African College of Physicians in 1983. Immigrated to New York, USA in 1986 and completed a 3 year research and clinical hematology and oncology fellowship at the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Columbia University where I remained for the next 20 years as the founding director of the Bone Marrow Transplant program and the Immunotherapy research and clinical trials program. Moved to the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine in 2006 where I am presently the Chief of the Division of Hematology at the Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center.
